Homonymy Neomeris Costa, 1844 appears to be the senior homonym of applications of the genus name in Animalia. According to Nomenclator zoologicus Neomeris Rafinesque, 1815 is an older animal genus name but is a nomen nudum, thus unavailable. The next Neomeris is Neomeris Gray, 1846, which is a cetacean, and has now the replacement name Neophocaena. Noting that there is also a moderately large plant genus Neomeris J.V.Lamouroux, 1816 in Chlorophyta which may be encountered in this database also. Although potentially confusing, plant names identical to animal names cannot be senior homonyms that affect zoological code names. [details]
