Checked: verified by a taxonomic editorType material 1 specimen, holotype, NHMUK 1907.10.28.127, as figured by Reeve (1849, pl. 7, sp. 34). Examinations have shown that the holotype is a very well preserved specimen of the species commonly referred to as Turritella variegata (Linnaeus, 1758), and has no relation whatsoever with the western African species Turritella gemmata Reeve, 1849, nor with Turritella banksii Reeve, 1849. Reeve separated this species from Kiener's Turritella nebulosa based on presence of secondary cords and on colour pattern. Examination of a large number of specimens of however shows that the occurrence of secondary cords is subject to a large degree of variation. As such, the present taxon is added to the synonymy of Linnaeus' species.  [details]
