Description Length: 380-430 mm. Colour: Adult male: Crest dark slate with white speckles; back and wings slatey-black with white speckles and bars; sides of head white with slaty-black streaking; chin white; flanks and undertail coverts white barred with black. Chest and breast dark chestnut. Bill and feet black. Female: Like male except breast white with black streaks and spots; belly chestnut. Juvenile male like adult male, but with chestnut on flanks; juvenile female like adult female but with white band between breast and belly. Habitat: Water edges with overhanging shrubbery including mangrove and coastal lagoons. [details]
