Description: Colour in life: burgundy with irregular white flecking (Sloan et al., 1979 ).
Also distributed in Maldive area, East Indies, north Australia, Philippine, China, south Japan and south Pacific Is. (Clark & Rowe, 1971); Australia (Rowe & Gates, 1995).
Ecology: benthic, inshore, continental shelf. General distribution: tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific Ocean, depth range 0-276 m. (Rowe & Gates, 1995). [details]
Remark: Thought to be a synonym of Dactylosaster cylindricus (Lamarck, 1816) by H.L. Clark (1921) but a valid species according to Döderlein (1926).
