Note  This is incertae sedis. Hippospongia canaliculata is an Australian species. A variety typica would in modern terms be the nominal variety (H. canaliculata var. canaliculata), but the var. typica is based on material from the Bahamas. This material has not been reexamined and is not assigned to either of the two known Caribbean Hippospongia species. [details]
