Description: Elongated oval shell, front rounded, back nearly straight. Sculpture of thick concentric and radial lines, the latter most prominent at the back. Shiny inside at the back and under the hinge with blue or purple hues. The shells measure up to 50 mm long and have a yellowish white or dun colour. [details] Distribution: In both periods Venerupis senegalensis was only observed in the western near-coastal zone. The frequency of occurrence in this zone increased from the first to the second period. The maximum density in both periods varied between 250 and 550 ind./m2. [details] Habitat: Although Venerupis senegalensis can be found in sediments with a median grain size between 150 and 450 μm, the species clearly prefers a median grain size between 150 and 250 μm. Venerupis senegalensis can be expected in sediments with a mud content < 30%, but prefers a mud content of 10-20% (relative occurrence: > 50%). [details] Synonymy: Preference is given here to the name Venerupis corrugata (Gmelin, 1791) over the simultaneously published name Venerupis senegalensis (Gmelin, 1791), following Huber (2010) and assuming Fischer-Piette & Métivier (1971) as "first reviser" i.e. an author who, for the first time, used both names as synonyms and used one of them as the valid name. However it remains to be checked if any earlier revision came to a different choice. [details] Synonymy: Bowden & Heppell (1968) demonstrated that the well-known name Venerupis pullastra (Montagu, 1803) should be replaced with the older V. senegalensis (Gmelin, 1791). According to Fischer-Piette & Metivier (1971) the correct name is V. corrugata (Gmelin, 1791). On the basis of 'first reviser' principle, the name V. senegalensis is used.
