Date of publication: The correct date of publication is 1758 and not 1767 as Peuchot & Tassin (1980) maintain. [details]

Umbos swollen, quite separate, separated from the hing line by a triangular ligamental area covered by a brown layer of the ligament. Exterior with very fine, granulose radial ribs and clear growth stages. Colour white, covered with a yellowish periostracum which forms a few scattered hairs in the vicinity of the ventral edge. [details]
Distribution: Eastern Atlantic, from the English Channel to Mauritania, also Canary and Cape Verde Islands; Mediterranean. Additional populations in Western and Southern Africa are considered as distinct subspecies.
Gorringe seamount, rare in 70-360 m. [details]
Habitat: Known from seamounts and knolls [details]
Habitat: Known from the nearshore. [details]
Type locality: Mediterranean Sea [can be inferred to be Algeria as the material originated from Brander, Swedish diplomat in Algeria at the time of Linnaeus] [details]
