The genus was not discussed in the Systema Porifera. It was erected by Sarà (1958: 240) in a paper published in the same year as the publication of its type species, Halicnemia loricata, but in different articles. This is probably why it was overlooked in all recent papers on Hemiasterellidae. The genus was considered different from Halistella (now: Paratimea) on account of its different skeletal structure, but is similar in spiculation to other Paratimea species.
