Als vom Naturhistorischen Museum zu Hamburg die Aufforderung an mich erging, die Polychaeten zu bearbeiten, die auf der Magalhaensischen Sammelreise von Herrn Dr. Michaelsen zusammengebracht waren, entschlofs ich mich, diese Aufgabe, bei der nur systematisches und faunistisches Interesse wahrzunehmen war, zu lösen. Dabei war für mich die Erwägung bestimmend, dafs mit dieser Arbeit annähernd die Annelidenfauna eines begrenzten Gebietes bekannt werden und damit ein kleiner Beitrag zu unserer ganz mangelhaften Kenntnis von der geographischen Verbreitung der Borstenwürmer geliefert werden könnte.
