[Synopsis]
Nonatus longilineus gen. sp. nov., here described has been found on the southern coast of Brazil. Forty genera of Capitellidae are also recognized and characterized.
[Summary]
Because the Capitellidae are in many ways very important, and their taxonomy of particular complexity, a better characterization of their genera is badly needed.
Forty genera are presently recognized and characterized in this paper. Some are referred to the Brazilian coast, namely: Capitella Blainville, Capitomastus Eisig, Dasybranchus Grube, Heteromastus Eisig, Mediomastus Hartman, Neopseudocapitella Rullier & Amoureux, Notomastus Sars and Paraleiocapitella Thomassin.
Good taxonomic characters are not easily available for some genera, consequently artificial groupings occur. Many genera have been insufficiently characterized and the descriptions by different authors are often in disagreement, as is the case for Capitella and Mediomastus. A new capitellid genus and species are described:
Nonatus longilineus - Thorax with 13 setigers, all birramous and provided exclusively with conspicuous capillary setae; no anterior achaetous segment; noto and neuropodial abdominal setigers bearing only hooded hooks, retractile branchial tufts present.
The generic name honors Dr. Edmundo Ferraz Nonato, who introduced me to study of the Polychaeta.
