Victorgorgia josephinae gen. nov. et sp. nov. is described and illustrated from a colony collected at the Josephine Bank, 1500 m in depth, on the French Victor cruise. As occurred with the discoveries of the genera Briareopsis Bayer, 1993, and Lignopsis Pérez & Zamponi, 2000, the new genus shows a set of mixed characters of two of the scleraxonian families, namely Briareidae and Anthothelidae. The new taxon has been tentatively placed in Anthothelidae waiting for a comprehensive revision of the scleraxonian taxa and their relationships.
