Neoheterobothrium hippoglossini sp. nov. is described and figured from the gill cavity of Hippoglossina stomata caught in January 1990 in the Pacific near the shore of southern California, USA. It differs from its 7 congeners in a number of morphological features (total length 3.89-7.2 mm, isthmus absent, 70-85 testes, relative length of clamp peduncle (more than 3 clamp widths)) and in having a different host. The validity of the genus Neoheterobothrium is discussed. It is suggested that N. mcdonaldi Payne, 1987 be removed from the genus and from the subfamily Choricotylinae and transferred to one of the remaining subfamilies of the family Diclidophoridae.
