Etymology Ancyracanthus is derived from the greek words "ankyra" (=anchor) and "akantha" (spine of a plant). Representatives of the subgenus have long aciniform ventrolateral teeth on segmet 4; therefore, when looking at the back, their body resembles an admiral anchor. [details]
