Type designation Emma Sherlock, curator of the Natural History Museum sponge collection, provided the following information on the Leucilla uter type material:

Wet Material: 2 jars
one with outer label: “Leucilla uter, Poléjaeff, 1884.4.22.21, Lectotype [part Exhib. dry Index Mus.] “Challenger” Coll, Sta. 36, 32 faths.” The jar also has inner labelling probably original to Poléjaeff, repeating station / depth information and adding date 22 Apr. 1873. The inner labels are very faded.

one with outer label: “Leucilla uter, Poléjaeff, 1884.4.22.30-1, Cotype, “Challenger” Coll, Sta. 209, 95-100 faths.” The jar also has inner labelling probably original to Poléjaeff, repeating station / depth information and adding date 22 Jan. 1875. The inner labels are very faded.

Dry Material:
one specimen, 1884.4.22.21: label says ‘Leucilla uter Pol. Type. 84.4.22.21 Challenger. ‘ The label writing looks like 20th century handwriting. This must be the dry part of 1884.4.22.21 which was originally displayed in the Index Museum.

Slides:

Slide 1924.2.6.94 label says “26.2.6.94 Leucilla uter Polej.” and “B.M. 32 Arthur Dendy.”
Slide 1924.2.6.95 label says “24.2.6.95 Leucilla uter Pol. ‘Challenger Coll. Brit. Mus. “ and “B.M. 32 Arthur Dendy.”
Note: In the drawer with these slides are additional slides of this species and most of them say “B.M. 32” or “Brit. Mus. 32.” There is one slide which is labelled as a Type = 1884.4.22.21a. There are an additional 5 older slides with this number, one of which says ‘Station 209, Challenger’. There is one more modern slide preparation with this number 1884.4.22.21 but I cannot make out the name of the person who prepared it. There is also a Leucilla uter slide labelled ‘Challenger Coll. 84.4.22. 30-1a.’
Challenger station 209 was West of Cebu Island, Philippine Island, collected 22/01/1875, Challenger station 36 was Bermuda Island, Collected 22/04/1873, [details]
