Publication date Modern authors (eg Cutler, 1994, Stephen & Edmonds, 1972) have cited the article "Danielssen, D. C. (1859). Beretning om en zoologisk Reise foretagen i Sommeren 1857" for the description of Sipunculus pyriformis, but it does not contain that name. Instead the name was first published in the precis of a meeting report (Danielssen, 1960). The brief description is mostly about the dimensions of the Sipunculan. [details]
Synonymy Sipunculus pyriformis Danielssen, 1860 cannot be treated as a junior synonym of Onchnesoma steenstrupii of 1875. However, Stephen & Edmonds (1972:163) place Sipunculus pyriformis Danielssen, 1860 as a junior synonym of Onchnesoma steenstrupii Koren & Danielssen, 1875. This is incorrect treatment. If it was a reliable synonym it would be the senior valid name. They cite Theel,1905 that the "name pyriformis was unsatisfactory" (ie not adequately described). Thus the way to place such a name is to regard it as indeterminable, rather than as a synonym of a later name. While it might be convenient to slot in a name with a likely match, it cannot be a reliable synonym if its characteristics are not known sufficiently. [details]
