A new species of the sea star belonging to the genus Perissogonaster (family: Pseudarchasteridae) from the northern East China Sea is described in this study. The specimen was collected at a depth of approximately 300 m off the south of Fukue Island, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. Perissogonaster multispinus sp. nov. is distinguished from Perissogonaster insignis, the only other species in the genus, by the following external features: numerous spines on the adambulacral plate including 8–10 furrow spines and 3–5 long, sharp, subambulacral spines; abactinal plates, excluding a single row of carinal plates that reaches the tip of the arm, extending to the base of the arms where 7th or 8th superomarginal plates (not counting the odd plate) are placed; and abactinal paxillae with more numerous central and peripheral granules than those of the known species. This finding is significant as it is the first record of a Perissogonaster species collected from further northern waters of the southern Philippine Islands, where the only congeneric species P. insignis has been documented.
