The Montoya Group (Ordovician) of Texas and New Mexico contains an excellent late Trentonian(?) and Cincinnatian brachipod fauna in which the superfamilies Plectambonitacea, Strophomenacea, and Atrypacea are well represented. The following species are described: Thaerodonta mucronata n. sp., T. mucronata scabra n. subsp., T. magna n. sp., T. cf. T. recedens (Sardeson), Strophomena neglecta (James), two unnamed species of Strophomena Blainville, Zygospira resupinata multicostata n. subsp., and Z. sulcata n. sp. Tetraphalerella Wang should be suppressed in favor of Strophomena because the ventral masculature of the former genus is too variable to be reliable for generic differentiation. Brachiopods from the Aleman and Cutter formations (Cincinnatian) closely resemble those from the Maquoketa Shale (Cincinnatian) of Iowa and Minnesota, which suggests their equivalency in age.
