Etymology Not stated, but evidently named after François Louis Henri Coutière (b. 4 March 1869 in Saulzet, France - d. 23 August 1952 in Orvilliers, France), a French zoologist specialized in the field of carcinology who collected the specimen in 1897 at Djibouti. [details]

Spelling Gravier later changed the spelling to coutierei, which perhaps is more appropriate, but the original spelling was 'coutieri'. Day's 1967 monograph popularised the misspelling as coutierei. [details]
