The Turonian type section (Upper Cretaceous of the Paris Basin near Tours), as defined by Lecointre in accordance with d'Orbigny's original concept, is briefly described to indicate the stratigraphic position of the samples studied. Foraminifera occur in the lower part of the section exclusively; fifteen species, two of them new, are discussed and illustrated. A new genus, Orostella, is erected. Relatively abundant specimens of Hedbergella in the planktonic assemblage, together with Orostella turonica, n. sp., and Gavelinopsis tourainensis, n. sp., appear to be the most useful criteria for microfaunal correlation with the type Turonian.
