Right from their appearance in the Upper Tournaisian, the foraminiferal assemblage of the Dinantian of Ireland shows affinities with the Russian and American provinces. The eastern affinities increase throughout the Visean and indicate the existence of an easy migration route. A new genus: Eblanaia Conil & Marchant, is described. The foraminiferal assemblages encountered in the Irish Dinantian have certain peculiarities which appear when they are compared with those of the Dinantian of the type area and other countries. The illustrations published by T. Marchant (1974) and R. Conil & A. Lees (1974) already revealed the interest of these faunas from the palaeogeographic viewpoint. The present study is based on sampling carried out under the guidance of G. Sevastopulo, C. Macdermot and T. Marchant who for several years have been engaged in a remarkable team study of Irish Dinantian biostratigraphy. They have kindly agreed to the publication of the information presented here which throws new light on the value of the Dinantian type sections of Western Europe.
