The ostracods inhabiting five "estuaries" of Senegal and Gambia have been investigated, during the dry season. Two of them showed some modifications during the wet season. A total of 27 species were gathered among which one is new: Miocyprideis leybarensis . The instability (shape and number) of marginal pore-canals is analyzed in Aglaiella sp. Three associations colonize these "estuaries": association 1 is marine; association 2 with Neomonoceratina iddoensis ; association 3 with Aglaiella sp. The daily and annual hydrological behavior determines the succession of these associations. The Senegal and Gambia rivers, with permanent fresh water, yield association 2. The Sine-Saloum River, a reverse estuary tending to hyperhaline state produces association 3. A paleoecological application for the Neogene deposits (top of Burdigalian/bottom of Langhian) within the Franco-Helvetian basin where Neomonoceratina is abundant is proposed
