Two new species of nummulitid: Nummulites luterbacheri and Assilina farafraensis are described from the basal Herdian of the Nusf formation (Esna Shale) from samples collected from the southern end of El Quss Abu Said, Farafra Oasis, Western Desert, Egypt. Nummulites roselli Schaub is also described for the first time from Egypt. The occurrence of such unexpected large size nummulites: N. luterbacheri in this stratigraphic level (Early Ilerdian) sheds a light on the first appearance of Nummulites which should be appeared during the Paleocene.
