Taxonomy Keratella stipitata (Ehrenberg) after Carlin (1945, partim)_x000d_
Keratella tecta (Gosse) has mostly been regarded as an infrasubspecific variety of the polymorphic species K. cochlearis (Gosse) in the past (e.g., Ahlstrom, 1943; Koste, 1978), but as a distinct morphospecies by more recent authors (e.g., Koste & Shiel, 1987). Accepting specific status may be justified by clear-cut ecological requirements of this Keratella, which is restricted to eu- to polytrophic lakes and ponds. The taxonomy of the genus, however, exclusively relies on lorica characteristics such as caudal spine length and fine structure of the dorsal lorica, which have been shown to vary in response to environmental conditions (Pejler, 1962; Ruttner-Kolisko, 1972; Gilbert & Stemberger, 1984). The taxonomic relevance of criteria previously used for systematics and hence the rank of this taxon thus remains unclear. See also Donner (1978:177), Hofmann (1983), and Koste & Poltz (1984:113)for a discussion of the taxonomic status of K. tecta. [details]
