Nomenclature Aegogropila or Aegagropila: The genus name Aegogropila erected by Gray (1867) is obviously misspelled. The inspiration for the genus name came from the species name Halichondria aegagropila Johnston, 1842, mentioned by Gray but misspelled as Halichondria aegogropila. Most authors (e.g. Vosmaer, De Laubenfels, Van Soest, Bergquist & Fromont, etc.) used Gray's name without correction, a few (Topsent, Dendy) used Aegagropila, implicitly assuming Gray's mistake should be corrected. Recent contact with the ICZN, however, established that Gray's mistake cannot be considered 'inadvertent' in the sense of article 32.5 of the Code, and thus should not be corrected. We have to maintain the use of Aegogropila, with Aegagropila as an objective junior synonym. [details]
