Homonymy The name is preoccupied by Chaetetes Eichwald, 1829. A complication is that Eichwald apparently was aware that Fischer was going to publish this genus name as he refers to him, rather than citing 'n.' to indicate he was erecting a new genus. He was aware of Fischer's work (cited his Oryctographie de Moscou, on p. 115) and simply added two undescribed species to Fischer's six species. Fischer's work is dated 1830-1837, but a first printing was done on November 29 1829 (noted on the flipside of the title page), which explains Eichwald's reference to Fischer's genus. In spite of the apparent homonymy, this is a case of prepublication use of the name authored by Fischer. If we follow ICZN recommendation 24B the name Chaetetes remains authored by Fischer. [details]

From editor or global species database
Classification This genus is used for a multitude of fossil taxa probably representing members of the phyla Porifera, Cnidaria, Bryozoa, Algae and similar sessile groups. The type species C. radians is supposed to be a sponge (Porifera, Demospongiae, Suberitidae), but this is by no means certain, as the type material of C. radians has not been reecently identified, its description is inconclusive. We adopt this genus in the WPD only because the name is frequently used in the older paleontological literature. [details]

Homonymy The name is preoccupied by Chaetetes Eichwald, 1829. A complication is that Eichwald apparently was aware that Fischer was going to publish this genus name as he refers to him, rather than citing 'n.' to indicate he was erecting a new genus. If we follow ICZN recommendation 24B the name Chaetetes remains authored by Fischer. [details]
