Taxonomy This is a senior homonym of Spongia tupha sensu Von Martens, 1824. Although almost all authors assigned Spongia tupha to Von Martens, 1824, he actually considered Pallas as the true author of the name. Pallas' description was considered ambiguous, so Von Martens became the preferred author. However, if Pallas' and Von Martens' material would be assignable to different species, the name of Von Martens would become a junior primary homonym of Pallas' name, thus demanding a nomen novum for Von Martens' species. However, the two are likely to be the same species and it is proposed here to merge the two under Spongia tupha Pallas, 1766. Topsent (1933) basing himself on Lamarck's (1814) interpretation of Spongia tupha Pallas, 1766, assigned S. tupha to his genus Stylinos (now Ulosa, except the type species) as a senior synonym of Stylinos (Ulosa) stuposa (Esper, 1794). This has not been followed by other authors. In the absence of Pallas' specimen it is not possible to verify, whether Lamarck's interpretation has more merits than Von Martens' and Schulze's hypotheses. This issue can be solved by indicating a neotype for Pallas' Spongia tupha. [details]
