Identification This name has been misspelled by Ridley (1884) as Spongia scyphonoides and by Brøndsted (1924) as S. scyphanoides. Since Ridley's material (as Reniera scyphonoides) differs from Lamarck's (this belongs to the genus Dactylia), Ridley's misspelling has been used as the name for a species distinct from Spongia syphonoides Lamarck, 1814 (q.v.). This violates art. 33.3 of the ICZN and the name must be replaced. [details]
