Spelling Harald Kryvi used this Sabella penicillum spelling in a series of non-taxonomic articles between 1971 and 1977. It is not known if he was using this spelling as an intentional corrected suffix, or simply had made an initial mistake. He is almost solely responsible for occurrences of this spelling, at least in a title.
Several apparent early occurrences of 'penicillum' in the 19th century reported by the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) were checked and all seemed due to OCR misreadings of standard Sabella 'penicillus' usages (even possibly an assignment meta data error at BHL as an intentionally aliased name). [details]
