Taxonomy An utterly confused taxon. According to the Neave, Guettards original genus was a ?Mollusca, he did not mention a specific name. His description and figures leave doubt, and as a consequence the taxon has been assigned to ? Protula Risso, 1826 by Moerch (1863: 358), picked up by Hartman (1959: 569), but regarded to be unlikely by ten Hove & Kupriyanova (2009: 105). To add to the confusion, it was misspelled by both Moerch and Hartman as Bunodes, a genus described by Eichwald, 1854 for a Xiphosura, by Gosse, 1855 for a Coelenterate. Moreover, the Neave gives Bunode (ex Guettard) Schweigger, 1820 (Vermes, Polychaeta). In reality, Bunode was the vernacular French name used by Guettard for his genus Bunodus, and well may have been an erroneous citation by Schweigger. [details]
