Editor's comment Day (1954) did not state explicitly which of the 46 stations where the new species was collected was the type locality, nor did he designate the type material. The Natural History Museum, London (UK) holds seven syntypes from the ''Norwegian Scientific Expedition to Tristan da Cunha 1937-1938'' (NSE) in its collections (NHMUK 1955.3.20.30-36), collected from station NSE 78, the 25th January 1938, at 0 meters. These syntypes were revised by Licher (1999). Curiously, station NSE 78 was not cited by Day (1954: 9) has providing specimens of Syllis tristanensis. Bakken (1999: 17) also refers type specimens of S. tristanensis from the NSE as being deposited at the collections of the Museum of Natural History and Archaeology, Trondheim (Norway). The text on the label attached to these specimens states that they are types, with the indication ''NSE 78.D; Day''. This indicates again station 78 of the NSE as being the origin of at least some of the syntypes of the species, but does not explain why station 78 was not listed together with the other records of the species by Day (1954). Station 78 of the NSE was located at Julia Point (northern shore of Tristan da Cunha Island), in a small enclosed rock pool in the spray zone, and is here considered to be the type locality of the species, or at least one of them, as syntypes from different stations might exist.  [details]

Etymology The specific epithet tristanensis refers to the type locality of the species, Tristan da Cunha (South Atlantic Ocean).  [details]

Habitat From Macrocystis rhizomes found floating on the surface, among rocks, stones, rubble, sand, gravel, Lithothamnion, and algae in the intertidal and surf zones, in Lithothamnion and rocky intertidal pools, and among subtidal kelp (Macrocystis), algae, sand, or stones and rocks overgrown with sponges, hydroids, bryozoans, or pelecypods. [details]
