Etymology Verrill (1873: 28) states for S. dianthus that the name alludes to the resemblance to Dianthus flowers as the colours of its branchiae “recalls the varied hues and forms of different kinds of pinks, (Dianthus.)” [details]Grammatical gender The botanical generic name Dianthus (flower of Zeus) is neo-Latin (Linnaeus and earlier) from Greek Δηοσ (Dios), genitive of Zeus, and ανθος (anthos) ‘flower’. As Serpula is feminine and dianthus is masculine it seems Verrill intended the name as a noun, thus it is invariant for gender.
