Etymology Not stated. The adjective punctatus -a -um is commonly used to indicate an animal with spots, dots, or punctures on the exterior surface. Laonome punctata is presumed named to indicate the body "with numerous minute purple spots scattered irregularly over its entire surface, forming a dense mass just posterior to the collar." Also there is "A prominent spot on posterior ventral face of each parapodium" [details]

Laonome punctata is presumed named to indicate the body "with numerous minute purple spots scattered irregularly over its entire surface, forming a dense mass just posterior to the collar." Also there is "A prominent spot on posterior ventral face of each parapodium" [details]Specimen Smithsonian Institution, Washington (USNM), Type no. 5223 [details] Synonymy Hartman (1942: 132 created a record for Sabellastarte indica for Hawaii which was based solely on the Hawaian type specimens of Laonome punctata Treadwell ,1906. She described the four specimens, including the spots and other pigment noted by Treadwell and stated that the specimens were typical Sabellastarte and not separable from Sabellastarte indica. Again in 1956 Hartman (1956:299) refers specimens, this time paratypes of Laonome punctata, to S. indica. However, Nogueira and Knight-Jones (2002) and Knight-Jones and Mackie (2003) refer Laonome punctata to Pseudobranchiomma (qv) as a valid species.
