Editor's comment Validity in doubt Hartman (1944:350) redescribed the Hawaii holotype and maintained Phragmatopoma moerchi as valid. Bailey-Brock (1987: 397) appears to indicate that colonies of P. moerchi occur off Oahu Island, Hawaii. However, Kirtley (1994: 38), although aware of Bailey-Brock's account, suggested that, as there were no specimens in the Bishop Museum, there were no indications that Phragmatopoma moerchi truly occurred in Hawaii. His implication was that Kinberg's record was erroneously assigned to Hawaii (instead of to southern South America), although Kirtley did not overtly state this. Kirtley synonymized P. moerchi to P. virgini, and suggested that alternatively it was a species inquirenda. The issue has not been resolved, although Nunes et al (2017) found a published genetic sequence identified as P. moerchi was distinct, although close to P. virgini. The geolocation of the specimen was not stated in Nunes et al, but it was submitted by Drake et al (2007) and came from Chile. There is no information on how this specimen was identified to be P. moerchi (type locality Hawaii), and in fact Drake et al had only tentatively assigned it to P. moerchi. Chávez-López (2020) reviewed Central & South American Phragmatopoma, and reported only one location for P. moerchi, which was the Hawaiian type locality, although southern South American workers have reported reefs of Phragmatopoma which they (eg. Sepúlveda et al 2003 in Chile) have assigned to P. moerchi. Chávez-López (2020) states that "re-description of P. moerchi is necessary", but appears to regard it as distinct.
