Etymology Salazar-Vallejo (2012) remarks that: "The original epithet spelling, “fernandense”,might have tried to indicate one of the collecting sites (Fernando Póo Island, Guinea), adjusted to the apparent feminine gender of Pycnoderma Grube, 1877." Note however that the comment about gender is incorrect. Derma is neuter, thus Pycnoderma is neuter, and the -ense suffix is the correct neuter ending as used by Augener, instead of -ensis, which is the adjectival suffix for gender agreement with both masculine and feminine genera.
