Etymology Not stated. The specific epithet variegata (masculine: variegatus) is a Latin adjective meaning 'streaked' or 'spotted', and presumably refers to the coloration of the palps, described as being ''crossed by 9 to 13 dark bands of pigment at irregular intervals'' (Imajima & Sato, 1984: 60). [details]

Association Lives in the shells of the scallop Mizuhopecten yessoensis (Jay, 1857), on which they were observed to settle and burrow holes, sometimes penetrating them. [details]

Depth range 30-40 m. [details]

Distribution Pacific Ocean: Abashiri Bay (Okhotsk Sea coast of Hokkaido, Northern Japan). [details]

[details]

Habitat From the shells of the scallop Mizuhopecten yessoensis (Jay, 1857), at 30-40 m depth. [details]

Human impact The species burrows in the shells of the scallop Mizuhopecten yessoensis (Jay, 1857), slowing down its growth rate. [details]

Reproduction From Imajima & Sato (1984: 61): Juveniles observed to settle in a very narrow band around the periphery of the left valve of the scallop in April, after the drift ice period in Abashiri Bay. They burrow holes in the shells, sometimes penetrating through it. Main spawning apparently from September to October. The worms lay egg capsules, attached to the wall of their mud tubes; eggs 130-140 µm in diameter. Mature sperm elongated, head length including middle piece measuring 12.5-15.0 µm. Larvae hatch from the egg capsule at the three chaetiger stage, measuring 320 µm in length. The larvae remain in the plankton until they settle and metamorphose during the drift ice period; at this time they have approximately 18 chaetigers. [details]

Type locality Abashiri Bay, Okhotsk Sea coast of Hokkaido, Japan, Pacific Ocean (gazetteer estimate 44.0º, 144.5º), 30-40 m, from the shells of the scallop Mizuhopecten yessoensis (Jay, 1857). [details]
