Etymology The specific epithet basalis is a Latin adjective meaning 'basal', and refers to the shape of the cirrophores in the middle and posterior region of the body, at the basal region of the dorsal cirri, where they are particularly thick and long, supporting the inner edge of the dorsal cirri all along their length.
