Etymology Not stated. The generic name is composed by the name of the genus Scoloplos Blainville, 1828, preceded by the Latin prefix pro-, meaning 'earlier', 'before' or 'prior to', being a prefix of priority in time or position, and presumably refers to the fact that ''this species was [at first] mistaken for a larval or post-larval'' Orbiniidae (Day, 1954: 21).  [details]

Diagnosis Original diagnosis by Day (1954. 21): ''Prostomium rounded, first two segments without parapodia, branchiae from 8th setiger. Notosetae are laddered capillaries only, neurosetae from 8th setiger also include sharply bent hooks.'' [details]

Diagnosis Small Orbiniidae with rounded prostomium, lacking obvious eyes. Postchaetal lobes present in both noto- and neuropodia. Branchiae start from chaetiger 6 or posterior. Notochaetae camerate capillaries only. Distinctive ‘‘swan-shaped’’ hooks in neuropodial position, starting from chaetiger 6 or posterior. Camerate capillaries also present in neuropodia. Aciculae absent. Pygidium with four tapered cirri. Nuchal organs and lateral organs present. [details]

[details]

Grammatical gender Proscoloplos gender was not stated, but must follow the gender of Scoloplos which is masculine from its etymology and matching the choice of adjectival epithets of successive authors. [details]

Type designation Type species of Proscoloplos, P. cygnochaetus, fixed by monotypy, not by original designation. The expression ''n.g. et sp.'', as applied by Day (1954: 21) to Proscoloplos cygnochaetus, would be deemed to be an original designation only if it had been applied before 1931, according to ICZN, article 68.2.1.  [details]
