Nomenclature Serpulinae exists by default as the nominal subfamily for all Serpulidae, except those explicitly assigned to another Serpulidae subfamily (such as Spirorbinae). Currently in WoRMS it contains no genera as the subfamily structure of Serpulidae is undecided, although Serpulinae would at least contain genus Serpula. The most recent analysis of Serpulidae (prior to the 'Annelida' book of Rouse et al, 2022) is Kupriyanova, Rzhavsky & ten Hove (2020) who write: (p.240) “… we accept the subfamily Spirorbinae nested within the family Serpulidae, but for now, we refrain from assigning the genera of the family Serpulidae (sensu lato) into subfamilies.” ten Hove & Kupriyanova (2009) had made similar comments. Earlier subfamily Serpulinae had been used by many but may have declined in use subsequent to the removal of Spirorbinae into Spirorbidae by Pillai (1970). As noted above currently Spirorbidae has been reverted to a subfamily of Serpulidae [details]
