Homonymy Replaced homonym. Axiothea Malmgren, 1866 is junior homonym to Axiothea Pascoe 1864 [Insecta], and replaced by Axiothella Verrill, 1900. Chamberlin (1919:410) suggested that "Axiothea Malmgren, being preoccupied (Pascoe, 1864), gives way to Paraxiothea Webster (1879), of which Clymenella and Axiothella of Verrill are also synonyms." However, the Paraxiothea type, Paraxiothea latens Webster, 1879, is a Clymenella, and not related to Axiothea/Axiothella.  [details]

Diagnosis Translated from Latin of Malmgren, 1866: Body subcylindrical, with 24 segments, of which 18 are setigerous and 4 are bare ante-anal. Cephalic lobe, with the first segment bare, completely coalesced, inclined, limbate, ending anteriorly in a short process. Upper setae capillary: some longer, smooth-limbed, others shorter and more pointed, very subtly feathered towards the apex on both sides. Lower setae uniserial, numerous in all setigerous segments, in the 3 anterior ones however fewer than in the following ones, apex of the beak 4-toothed, sometimes provided with a 5th smallest tooth obsolete or evanıda, under the beak a bundle of upward-curving capillaries. Last segment infundibuliform [funnel-shaped], margin ciliated. Terminal anus at the bottom of the infundibulum [funnel] [details]
