Authority Neave (nom. zool.) gives the following as basis for Trophonia: "Trophonia Johnston 1840 Ann. nat. Hist., 4, 371; Audouin & Edwards 1848, in Edwards in Cuvier, Règne Anim. (disciples' ed.) (Ann.), 46. Verm (Polych.). (ex Audouin & Edwards)." The reference in Cuvier (disciples ed) is: "MM. Audouin et Milne Edwards en distinguent aussi les trophonies (a)" for which the source is: "Trophonia barbata, Aud. et Edw., Littoral de la France, Annél., pl. x, f.13-15." However, this same reference appeared in Cuvier earlier (1830:211) where it is therefore a nomen nudum at that date. The further problem is there is no plate 10 in the eventual 1834 publication of "Littoral de la France" of Aud et Edw (at least not in the BHL digitisation). A further part continuing the annelids was intended but may not have been published. Plate 22 in the disciples edition appeared earlier than the 1848 text and has figures of Trophonia barbata, making the name valid, but this plate was not published until March 1843 according to Cowan (1976: 61) Thus the first valid publication of Trophonia genus appears to be in Johnston, 1840:371, as Neave has stated. This is a description of new species Trophonia goodsirii, thus it would be type of the genus. [details]
