Diagnosis Original diagnosis by Wesenberg-Lund (1950: 54): "Generic characters: About 70 segments. No gills. Capillary setae from the third segment to the end of the body. Hooks uniform, commencing in the second chaetiger, uniserial in the first 8, biserial in a number of intermediate segments, and uniserial in about the last 30-35 segments." [details]

Diagnosis Emended diagnosis by Hutchings & Glasby (1988: 11): "Abranchiate Amphitritinae, lateral lobes absent, ventral glandular shield well developed on some anterior segments. Notopodia from segment 4, continuing to near posterior end, notosetae of 2 types, limbate with serrated tips in anterior setigers becoming broadly geniculate, flail tipped with strongly serrated blades from about segment 13-15 (setiger 10-12), to end of body. Neuropodia present from segment 5 (setiger 2) to almost the pygidium, uncini uniformly short, avicular with 4-5 rows of small teeth above the main fang, uncini arranged in single rows initially, then in double rows for 20 or more setigers, then arranged in single rows for remaining setigers." [details]
