Editor's comment Marenzeller (1895) is credited as author, but the item appears to be one of a series of short meeting report narrations, or abstract of research referring to Marenzeller in the third person. [details]
Etymology Not stated. Compound Greek, from 'phalacro' meaning bald-headed, and 'stemma' meaning crown, thus 'bald-headed crown. As stemma is neuter the genus is neuter. [details]
Grammatical gender As stemma is neuter in Greek and Latin the genus is neuter. Adjectival species name suffixes in Phalacrostemma should have neuter suffixes. Marenzeller appears to have used a neuter ending for the type species name 'cidariophilum'. Nicolson (1994: "Gender of Generic Names, Particularly Those Ending in -ma ...") placed 'stemma' as neuter. However, Kirtley (1994:147) stated Phalacrostemma was feminine in gender. This is incorrect. [details]
