Etymology Northia Johnston, 1865 is junior homonym to the molllusc Northia Gray, 1847, but intriguingly it does not look like Malmgren (1867) was aware of this when he replaced Johnston's name with 'Nothria'. Malmgren apparently thought (footnote his page 66) that Johnston had made a spelliing mistake because Malmgren writes (in translation) "Johnston probably writes Northia by mistake, for I cannot imagine that the name was derived from the English word North in the same way as Fromia Grey (sic for Gray) from the English particle 'From'." Thus it looks like Nothria Malmgren was at the time an unnecessary replacement name, which later became relevant when the homonymy match to Northia Gray 1847 (Nassariidae in Gastropoda) was discovered. Probably it would have been less confusing if Malmgren had not rearranged the spelling, but instead created a distinctively new name. The word "noth" is not in dictionaries so his choice of it as replacement for what Johnston supposedly intended is strange. [details]

Grammatical gender Nothria has been treated as a feminine genus by authors for adjectival names, following the apparent gender of Johnston's original name of 'Northia' (a replaced homonym). Johnston (1865) had used the recombinations Northia tubicola and Northia conchylega (Sars) replacing the former use of Onuphis as the genus. [details]
