Etymology Not stated by the author. The name Capitellethus seems to be composed by the name Capitella Blainville, 1828, the type genus of the family Capitellidae, followed by the suffix of Greek origin -ethus, meaning 'habit' in the sense of a characteristic morphological condition, and refers presumably to the clear capitellid habitus of the genus. Nomenclature Nom. nov. for junior homonym Capitellides Ehlers, 1907 [details]
Taxonomy Chamberlin (1919: 466) replaced Capitellides Ehlers (1907), which is a junior homonym to Capitellides Mesnil (1897). He gave no further diagnosis there, but in a preceding key the characters are successively: thorax with capillary chaetae only, abdomen with hooks only, no branchiae, 11 thoracic chaetigers with no macroscopic distinction between thorax and abdomen. Green (2002: 274) maintained Capitellethus as distinct from Notomastus partly on the basis of hooks having only 2 large teeth in the basal row (Notomastus is expected to have multiple small teeth in the basal row). Green pointed out Fauchald's (1977) characterization of Capitellethus in his table of genera with 10 thoracic chaetigers was incorrect, and stated that the first thoracic segment lacked chaetae. Magalhaes & Bailey-Brock (2012) endorsed this diagnosis. [details]
