Etymology Not stated by the author. The specific epithet venustum is a Latin adjective meaning, 'beautiful', 'elegant' or 'charming', and refers presumably to the presence of red epidermal glands: "The red spots everywhere dotting the inner surface of the covering, gives it a beautiful appearance" (Leidy, 1850: 47). [details]

Status Vaillant (1890: 463) stated that "L'Æolosoma venustum et le Chætodemus panduratus, trouvés dans les environs de Philadelphie, ne paraissent pas différer des Æolosoma Hemprichii, Ehr. et Æ. quaternarium, Ehr. [respectivelly.]" Later, Beddard (1895: 184) considered that the species was a synonym of A. quaternarium instead: "Leidy's A. venustum is only distinguished from A. quaternarium, according to Leidy himself, by its smaller size and longer setae. These characters can hardly be considered sufficient." Finally, van der Land (1971: 691) listed the species under the species inquirendae, considering the taxon to be "an unidentifiable species". The species needs to be reassessed. [details]
