Etymology "This species is named in honor of Dr. A. C. Stokes, who, in his excellent little book, "Microscopy for Beginners," mentions a double-fascicled Aeolosoma observed by him, which is, perhaps, identical with it" (Craig, 1887: 31). [details]
Habitat Among algae, in a freshwater creek. [details]
Status Beddard (1889: 51, footnote) stated "I cannot discover any characters by which it [Aeolosoma stokesii Craig, 1887] can be differentiated from Æ. quaternarium or Æ. ehrenbergii." Later, van der Land (1971: 690) listed the species under the species inquirendae, considering the taxon to be "an unidentifiable species". The species needs to be reassessed. [details]
