A new terebellid polychaete species is described from a sandflat on the west coast of Taiwan. Amphitrite lobocephala, new species, lives in U-shaped tubes and is gregarious. The new species is similar to Amphitrite edwardsii (Quatrefages). Both species have 17 thoracic setigers and three pairs of well developed branchiae. Uncini are present from uncinigerous segments 7-16. The new species differs markedly from A. edwardsii and other species of Amphitrite that have been recorded from Pacific and adjacent waters by the presence of lateral lobes on the peristomium. A key is provided to the species of Amphitrite from the western Pacific, East Indies, Red Sea, Mediterranean and northern Australia.
