Polychaeta from the deeper waters off the New Zealand coasts have been described by Mclntosh (1885), Augener (1924, 1926), and Benham (1927). These Polychaeta were obtained from dredgings and there has been no complete account of the fauna from any one locality. Polychaete faunas of the soft bottom deposits from the continental shelf in various parts of the world are well known; but there are few accounts of a complete fauna from rocky bottoms. The present collection was obtained from a sandstone slab, approximately three feet by two feet and eighteen inches thick, trawled by Mr G. Lynne, master of the trawler Rawene, from 80 fathoms off Banks Peninsula, 40 degrees 51 minutes S., 173 degrees 31 minutes E.
