Taxonomy Treadwell created this name as a variety of Marphysa acicularum Webster from the same location. Molina-Acevedo & Carrera-Parra(2015:42) reported that type material of M. acicularum brevibranchiata is probably lost, and that "its taxonomic status cannot be assessed". They make no comment on Treadwell's description in which he said that the subspecies (as a variety in Treadwell) had shorter and more branched branchiae which are present on more segments. Hartman (1944) and latter the Hartman catalogue listed it and M. acicularum in synonymy with the species M. sanguinea, then thought to be widespread. Subsequently Molina-Acevedo & Idris (2020) found syntypes in the general collection at the AMNH, where most of the Treadwell’s species were deposited, and created a lectoype, AMNH 1358 at full species rank.
