Etymology Not explicitly stated by the authors. The specific epithet lanceolata is a Latin adjective meaning 'lanceolate' or 'having the form of a lance', and refers presumably to the shape of the dorsal cirri: "A median parapodium [...] has a lanceolate dorsal cirrus longer than wide, with broad base and slightly acute tip [...] Pirakia lanceolata differs from [...] the only other known species of the genus, in having lanceolate, instead of cordate, dorsal cirri" (Hartman & Fauchald, 1971: 45).
